HP 1020 1022 Print Drivers Crashing the Print Spooler

Posted by William Diaz on July 21, 2010

We see numerous complaints about missing printers. This will happen when the Windows print spooler (spoolersv.exe) is not running and we often see this complaint with those setup with personal HP 1020/1022 printers. While attempting to print PDFs, or after printing PDFs, the print spooler is crashing. The drwtsn32.log and user.dmp files in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson all point to the same culprit, the HP ZSR.dll print driver.mHere is an excerpt from the drwtsn32.log:

An event may also be written to the Windows Event Viewer:

This seems to be a known issue with no driver resolution, only workarounds. There is also a forum on HP discussing this problem here. To work around this issue quickly, you can check the option to Print as image from the Adobe print options dialog box. This has worked so far for us. You will need to delete the temp print files created in c:\windows\system32\spool\printers before attempting to restart the spooler, otherwise the spooler may continue to crash.

Some other workarounds:

  • Download and install a generic post script printer driver from here and then download this PPD file as installation of the post script printer driver requires this.
  • Download and install FinePrint from here. Point to FinePrint when printing PDF documents. Select the printer you want the PDF files to print to. FinePrint will provide your 1020 printer with PCL capabilities. .
